Primula ludlowii - Species, Subspecies or Variety?

In 1934, Frank Ludlow and George Sherriff discovered Primula plants growing on a cliff on the Diwangiri-Trashigong Road in Bhutan. Collection #552 was named Primula sherriffae in honor of George Sherriff's Mother. The spelling of this has been corrected to P. sherriffiae, according to the IAPT code 60C. On the same cliff, they gathered collection #554 which was initially listed as P. sherriffae forma pygmaea, as the plants were much smaller than those collected under #552. A live plant of #554 was brought back by George Sherriff, which flowered in cultivation. Differences were noted between it and P. sherriffiae and in 1936, W. W. Smith described #554 as the new species P. ludlowii.

The characteristics which differ in P. ludlowii are size (both the plant and flowers are smaller), efarinose corolla, corolla tube is finely pilose on the inside and outside. The flowers are solitary (or two flowered) and the scape is almost obsolete. Additionally, it seems as though P. ludlowii has flowers which are darker purple in color.

So we have two related species growing on exactly the same cliff. That is suspicious in terms of whether we actually have two distinct species. This brings up the obvious - what determines whether a plant is a distinct species, a subspecies or a variety? Unfortunately scientists have failed to agree on a  precise definition of these terms so that, to some extent, personal opinion is a component of classifying species. Because there are different concepts of species (morphological, phenetic, phylogenetic, ecological, etc) that may result in different levels of "splitting" and "lumping", I think it is prudent in any comprehensive document on a Genus that the author states which concept he choses to follow and applies that consistently in his taxonomy or at least note where he deviates and why.

The following definitions are often cited: Species are a group of individuals that interbreed or could interbreed in nature and thus have a high level of genetic similarity, Subspecies are groups of individuals that could interbreed but do not because of factors such as geographic isolation, but are not distinctive enough to warrant species status, and Varieties are individuals which can breed but differ from others by some consistent minor noticeable characteristics. A species may evolve over time by one or several factors such as reproductive isolation, geographic isolation, and reduction of gene flow. Two species that live in the same location may have evolved from a single ancestor species, through a process called sympatric speciation. This process is not accepted by all authorities.

Certainly further study of these plants, including a survey of variation and genetic analysis, could be helpful in determining the status of P. ludlowii, but there will likely be no right or wrong answer - just a difference of opinion. P. fasciculata or P. tibetica ?

There has always been some confusion over the species P. tibetica and P. fasciculata because they look so much the same.

P. tibetica was described based on collections from Gyanama (Gyanima or Gyanema), north of Kumaon in SW Tibet and also from Kangra Lama, north of Sikkim in S Tibet. The species was described by Watt and an illustration was made at the time. The species is described as having scape to 3 inches tall (13cm according to the Flora of China) with 1-5 flowers and bracts linear-oblong, producing downwards into a gibbosity (pouched bracts). Unfortunately, the original illustration doesn't show the bracts in this fashion and the type material online isn't of sufficient resolution is see this feature. This type of bract is also found in P. munroi though the downward part is larger (4-7mm vs 1-1.5mm).

P. fasciculata was described based on a collection by Kingdon Ward on the Chungtien (Zhongdian) plateau in Yunnan. This species was described by Balfour & Ward and they noted that none of the type specimens have a scape, all flowers being solitary and do not reflex back as they are said to do in P. tibetica. The observation is made that P. fasciculata could be considered the Eastern representative of P. tibetica. The Flora of China says that this species can have short scapes to 2.5cm.

Looking for Primulas in Google Earth Pro (now free)

Using Google Earth to plot botanical expedition routes - old and new - and to locate type locations and plot species distributions has become the norm for me. I like the visual representation of the data. Places can be marked and saved with both old names and new and that helps when you are reading old journals, field notes and books about botanical expeditions.
Besides viewing this data as a flat map, you can tilt the perspective to see the area in 3D. You can "stand" on a pass and look into the distance and see the peaks as you would on a clear day, just like perhaps George Sherriff did. How cool is that?! If you are a computer geek like me, you will soon want to capture a route as a video, swooping down valleys and soaring over passes as if you can fly through the air. With the free version of Google Earth, there was no ability to capture video. You needed the Pro version which cost about $400US. Now Google has released the Pro version for free.

Download the software on Google using your email address and the key GEPFREE. Even though it may say trial version, it isn't.


The video is one I just created with Google Earth Pro. The white line is the approximate route travelled by Ludlow & Sherriff in 1933 from Singye Dzong over the Kang La in Bhutan. Singye Dzong is located at 27°58'23.37"N 91°17'44.15"E. Primula eburnea was collected at the Tsho Kar (White Lake), on the way to the pass. In the distance, the yellow line marks the border between Bhutan and Tibet.

In October, 2013, more than 1,000 devotees trekked to Singye Dzong and the lakes for a special drupchen ceremony. Another blog post about travel in this area. Unfortunately this area isn't open to foreign tourists.

Did you know you can view historical imagery on Google Earth? Over time, a place may be imaged repeatedly for display on Google Earth. You may think that the currently displayed image is the best, but sometimes clouds can get in the way. To look at the Bimbi La, Tsari in Tibet, it is better to look at a historical view.
